STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Runway Meets Everyday Wear

Successful designers always keep their pencils moving, and they never leave their studio once they start a new collection for the upcoming season. Dedicated and inspired, they constantly work on new ideas, and they never put their creativity on hold. The designers’ lines are advertised in magazines, social media sites, television and through online retailers. As one can see, fashion seen on the runway has a significant role in today’s media. As a result, major designers influence how individuals look at fashion and how they portray themselves in terms of style. In addition, popular trends originate from the runway, which conceptualizes our ideas behind fashion.

For men and women who have a keen interest in fashion, he or she may wonder how to incorporate runway trends into one’s personal wardrobe. Clothes seen on the runway can intimidate many aspiring Fashionistas or Fashionistos because the looks are either too avant-garde or expensive. Designers often find inspiration through their everyday surroundings and they capture their visions under specific themes. When looking at collections, find the deeper meaning behind the fashion. Once you learn more about the collection, you will have a better idea of what elements to incorporate in future looks.

This week’s Fashionista created a look that resembles the Christian Dior pre-fall 2015 runway collection. In the show, Raf Simons bases his creativity off of traditional winter wear. He reemphasizes the use of heavy material but dramatizes each look through the use of sequins and blotches of bright color. In particular, he focuses on the typical winter sweater and then modernizes it with shimmering sequins. The Fashionista photographed above wears a Victorinox polo and layers it with a J.Crew sweater. She adds a special touch by embellishing her outfit with a jeweled necklace from Nordstrom and a navy blue watch from Victorinox. Looking closer, her orange sweater has zigzag detailing, which is a reoccurring detail in the collection. In addition, the outfit pops because of the blue detailing in the sweater, polo and watch. Overall, the Christian Dior collection has more of a formal and avant-garde edge; however, this Fashionista shows how one can turn a runway look into an everyday outfit.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Research five designers that make a powerful impact on your personal style. Observe each look and take note of all the details that make each outfit standout. Find the collection’s color scheme, patterns, silhouettes, accessories and makeup. It’s not necessary to incorporate every detail in one look. Pick one element that you admire most and make it the major focus in your outfit.”
