STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Revival Of The ‘90s Schoolgirl

March 12th, 2015 at 2:00am

Our generation’s nostalgia for the ‘90s is no secret. Those were simpler times when the Spice Girls reined supreme and Hey Arnold! was part of your daily routine. Now that our generation of so-called ‘90s kids has reached early adulthood, we are the trend makers who have the power to decide what’s in. It’s no surprise then that ‘90s fashion has experienced a revival as of late. Chokers and Dr. Martens have come back into style as millennials pine after their childhood. One of the biggest trends that has been resurrected from the ‘90s is the classic schoolgirl outfit. Not only has this trend shown up in Iggy Azalea’s tribute to Clueless in her “Fancy” video, but variations of the schoolgirl look were present all over the spring 2015 runways.

Though more subdued than Cher’s famous yellow plaid getup, this Fashionista’s outfit is clearly influenced by the ‘90s schoolgirl trend. She has chosen a palette of neutral colors and added a pop of color with this cobalt blue skirt. She updated the look by wearing a leather jacket rather than a blazer which gives the outfit a more laid back, adult vibe. A leather jacket like this one is also a fantastic choice for this transitional period between winter and spring. It’s perfect to throw over any outfit and can be worn during the day or for a night out.

Of course, this Fashionista didn’t forget the key to the schoolgirl look: knee-high socks and oxford shoes. Whether you’re keeping it classic or putting a spin on the schoolgirl style, oxfords or Mary Janes with high socks are essential. This ‘90s kid nailed a modern spin on a vintage trend.
