STYLE ADVICE: Recycling an Old Trend

January 12th, 2017 at 2:00am

Think back to your younger self; I’m talking all the way back to 2012. What was the trend? Aztec print. You had a couple of Aztec patterned shirts, maybe a skirt or sweater too. Where are those clothes now? You probably donated them to Goodwill or passed them on to a younger sibling. But as a good Fashionista/o knows, a trend could always jump back into style. And if it doesn’t, you can bring it back yourself! That’s what our Fashionista here is doing: recycling an oldie.

Bringing Aztec patterns back might sound like bringing back Nickelback music—let the past be the past. However, rocking an old trend can be easy if done in the right way. This Fashionista took the basic all-black look as a backdrop for her ensemble. She paired simple booties with classic black skinny jeans. On top, she wore a short sleeve black turtleneck to fit the season’s trend and sported black aviators.

Black is always the new black so this was a perfect base for our Fashionista. The addition of the Aztec-printed cape gave this outfit the element of pop it needed. Some may say fringe has been overdone on bags and scarves already, but the fringe detailing on the cape is quite subtle. It even adds a contemporary nature to the throwback print.

This look is perfect for a day at the museum or on the streets window-shopping. This Fashionista can easily transition to evening by adding a pair of pumps and ditching the sunnies for a colorful clutch. A red lip and some dangly earrings would complete the night look.

Remember: don’t be afraid to recycle an old piece; how do you think the ’90s came back in style?!
