STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Practical Fashion

February 3rd, 2015 at 2:10am

The start of 2015 has been booming with fur coats, hats, scarfs, earmuffs and the like. Any way to stay fashionably warm in the midst of this winter is much appreciated. I caught this Fashionista just after class. The wind was crazy and the air had a brisk, dry feel to it. She, however, looked cozy warm—even in ankle boots! Her jacket was the perfect balance for a casual outfit—not overdone at all. Keeping a fur look simple is easier said than done.

You can read it in my bio—I LOVE fur. I’m always up for any excuse to drape myself in faux fur, no questions asked. But this doesn’t mean I wear it around every day. The problem with fur is trying to keep it current and activity appropriate. Sure, if I were headed to the Met Ball with Ryan Gosling on my arm, any amount of fur I could find would do. However, it’s just not an item that can look appropriate on a dreary day walking around campus. The trick is not to overdo it.

This Fashionista has the right idea. Fun ankle boots, boyfriend jeans, bohemian hair and a pattern scarf leave just enough room for the fur jacket. It is practical and stylish. She blends into the crowd while simultaneously standing out with exquisite taste. Another fun idea could be pairing a fur jacket with some simple trousers and a turtleneck. If you want to start off small—get yourself a fur hat, and wear it with the classic trench coat or down jacket. This will leave your ears toasty warm and have you feeling stylish all day long.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “There’s nothing wrong with being practical and stylish. It IS possible. It is freezing outside; I’m not going to act like it’s summertime. The trick is to stay warm while still showcasing your personal style.”
