STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Chic

February 3rd, 2015 at 2:00am

As the dreary winter weather starts to become more constant, everything seems to be so gray and muted all the time. This can start to reflect many winter wardrobes, when it seems that everyone has adopted a much darker color palette. Muted colors don’t have to be boring. This Fashionista’s neutral color palette offers a great example.

What initially caught my eye about her outfit was the way that she styled delicate, feminine pieces with an edgier outfit. This put a fun spin on the traditional girly skater skirt, tights and boots ensemble that we see so often in the colder months.

Who said neutrals were boring, though? Utility jackets seem to be one of the most recent, functional trends recently in women’s wear. They can be styled in so many different ways, but I love the look of mix-and-matched tomboy-cut pieces with feminine accents. Its aesthetic is incredibly similar to that seen in the outfits put together by J.Crew in their style guides. Not to mention, this skater skirt is the perfect balance with the traditional white T-shirt; it’s flowy and eye-catching, complementing the jacket perfectly with its gold tones and sparkly detailing. Pair it with a simply-structured statement necklace, and you have the perfect girly winter look without feeling too much like a ballerina.

You can’t have a perfect outfit without the right accessories, right? Playing off the military-inspired jacket, this Fashionista decided that an edgy, studded boot was the way to go. A neutral boot is a definite must for any winter wardrobe since it can be worn with almost any outfit, adding some fun detailing. What’s the icing on the cake? It’s a structured winter coat. I’m a definite believer in investing in the perfect winter jacket: one that keeps you warm, yet still is classy and clean cut. I love how this Fashionista styled her Michael Kors coat. The detailing almost exactly matched her outfit. Not only will it help her brave winter winds, but it will also make her look like she is straight out of New York.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “You can never go wrong with a statement necklace; it’s the perfect way to add a feminine touch to any outfit.”
