STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Let's Talk About Coats

January 22nd, 2015 at 2:00am

Coats are often overlooked. Let’s just face it. I’m guilty of it, too. I can’t remember the last time I had a nice dress coat that I wore to dinner parties. Now, I just throw on a parka and head out the door.

This is something that needs to change. Now is the time to wear a nice trench coat, peacoat or topcoat. Coats do matter and can really jazz up an outfit. They make walking down the street to grab a latte just that much more fabulous or hopping into a cab that much more glamorous. With the right coat, you can instantly become a Fashionista while staying warm at the same time!

Coats are a statement all on their own. This Fashionista embraces the bold green topcoat she has on that really brings an old Hollywood look into her outfit. Underneath her topcoat is a cheetah shift dress that gives her whole attire a timeless look. Even her red lipstick becomes an accessory for her outfit. She keeps her jewelry minimal and simplistic to draw more attention to her clothing pieces. With a coat as bold as hers, jewelry isn’t as major.

Let’s talk about different kinds of coats and ways to wear them. A cape coat is totally my style. It’s something you can wear big, chunky jewelry with and keep on while you’re in the office. Just add a belt, and you’re set. A topcoat is great if you’re walking down the street and trying to keep warm. Add an infinity scarf, and you’ll be ready to take the city by storm. Lastly, there’s the good ole peacoat that we need to discuss. A peacoat is much shorter than a topcoat, but still keeps you dry and warm. This style of coat looks great with dress pants and over-the-knee boots. With a peacoat, you have to make sure whatever you’re wearing looks just as great.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Don’t be afraid to try something new when it comes to coats. Think of it as another accessory, and find one that goes with everything. Coats are a necessity for winter, anyways, so why not get one that looks great?”

Lauren. Lo. LoBerry. LoB. Call me any one of these things and I'll respond. I have a habit of quoting Carrie Bradshaw. When I write at my computer I look out the window and like to think I'm in a little apartment in NYC too. I love the 80's. The 80's meaning The Breakfast Club or basically anything John Hughes related. I'm recently in love with heart-eyed sunglasses. I dream of going to New Mexico sometimes, but maybe that's just because I really love turquoise. I also can't speak any languages even though I have taken Spanish for 6 years. Gracias. In the end I hope to one day be at Glamour Magazine's "Women of the Year" event. Give me 10 years.
