STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Higher Than The Average

Some blame Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman for the negativity associated with this trend, as her character portrayed a provocative role with a boot as audacious as the thigh-high. In the past, thigh-high boots, also known as over-the-knee boots, have been deemed rather inappropriate for everyday wear. Regardless of their associations, runway shows such as the recent Alexander Wang fall 2014 ready-to-wear, have given light to this trend.

The key to differentiating between properly dressed and not are what you pair with your thigh-highs. This Fashionista displays a good example of how to wear these formerly controversial boots in a simple, casual approach with a bit of edge.  While her leather thigh-highs are tight, her flowy sweater creates a balance in her look between feminine and fierce. On a rainy daym these leather boots provide a nice shield while walking through campus, as they cover a great portion of the leg. She tops her look with a chic raincoat. What I like about her coat is the drawstring gather at the waist that accentuates her shape. While the coat is long, she keeps it unzipped, which I recommend to those with a concern of height. For a shorter body type, opt for a top that sits right at the hips. This creates a space between your boots and hemline to prevent your outfit from overpowering your frame. For a more glamourous look, throw on a mini sequin skirt with sheer stockings.
