STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Form Over Function

When it comes to both form and functionality in fashion, the majority of the clothes we choose to wear usually have a balance of both. Sometimes, however, we want to wear pieces that are just appropriate to wear because of what they were made to do (like our puffy parkas in the winter and wellies when it’s raining), and we still have the urge to style them so that they look like a true part of our outfits. Otherwise, we might want to rock pieces that seem to have less of a practical purpose, but definitely complete the look we’re going for.

This Fashionisto found a way to incorporate both form and function into his outfit by pairing arbitrarily detailed essential fall outerwear with denim and metal accessories that add solely to the look’s overall aesthetic. He is sporting a zipper detailed bomber jacket from ASOS, a dip-dyed sweater from Gap, curved leg printed jeans from Boris Bidjan Saberi and a pair of Geobaskets from Rick Owens. He’s also wearing a custom set of silver grillz on the bottom row of his teeth to accessorize in a bold yet incredibly cool manner.

Incorporating both form and function in an outfit requires careful planning of putting different pieces together. As the bomber jacket on this Fashionisto adds a bit of warmth to complete his outfit, it definitely has a practical function for being there, however, its straps and pocketless sleeve zipper details add no particular function. These intricate details are  solely aesthetically pleasing, which may not seem sensible at first, but all in all the extra details add to the outfit to tie the functional pieces together stylishly. This aspect of the look comes full circle with curved leg jeans he has on. These exhibit aesthetically pleasing, unique form without compromising functionality too much to be sensible to wear. The way they stack on the lower leg is a result of the designer denim’s signature tight tapering from the knee down, which makes it seem as though they’re difficult to wear comfortably. However, when they are paired with a basic sweater and high-top sneakers, they are definitely wearable.

A Fashionista/o who’s daring enough to flaunt metal on his or her teeth would definitely, above all, have to sacrifice practicality for the look. A word of advice from this Fashionisto, think about what you’re going to do that day. Are you going out to lunch or are you going out shopping? Decide whether or not it’s truly worth sacrificing functionality to look awesome and whatever you accessorize with, wear it all confidently and you’ll rock it.

Leaning to either side of the form versus functionality scale can be fun, and above all else, fashionable.
