STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Follow the Patterned Path Into High Fashion

As a New Yorker I cherish fall. The leaves change colors, and the crisp air fills me with happiness. And best of all, it’s the season with the best fashion options because of layering! Often I think people limit their style efforts to dressing up, fearing that the colder weather makes it simply too cold for bare legs and a dress. But fashion is much more than looking nice in a dress, and style can be owned year-round.

This Fashionista shows us how to rock fall in boyfriend jeans paired with a long-sleeved blouse.  Her darling outfit perfectly embodies her quirky and creative style with an androgynous edge. Pairing different patterns is ambitious and hard to master because it’s easy to overwhelm the body or mix clashing garments. But this fashionista is a master at subtly mixing patterns. The navy-patched polka dots in her jeans match up with the dots from the flowers in her scarf. The scarlet flower motif does double duty, working with her scarlet earrings and the flower lace in her shirt. Those two flower patterns are different, but they focus on the same theme, and all the patterns are small and only occupy part of the garment. This helps her rock the outfit and not the other way around: the outfit doesn’t overwhelm her figure.

Her tall booties also add height to the look, which helps separate everything that is going on and adds a powerful edge, making Fashionistas of all heights extra happy. In terms of styling this outfit, she leaves the color to her accessories. If you have a colorful outfit, think opposites; go black or grey with your accessories. Either way, it’s a balancing act. Ultimately playing with a button-up blouse and boyfriend jeans is an androgynous game. Don’t be afraid to channel your inner “power Fashionista.” Your accessories can make your outfit more girly or crazier, so keep your personal style in mind as you choose your direction. But most of all, have fun! The key to patterns and layering them in the fall is to not overthink them.
