STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Florals? For Summer? Grounbreaking!

June 9th, 2015 at 2:10am

Like every Fashionista/o knows, sayings and phrases can come from anywhere, but most come from pop culture. So, last Friday night I decided to indulge on some movies while it rained and poured outside. And what better movie for a Fashionisto like me than David Frankel’s The Devil Wears Prada. As I snuggled into my blanket and treated myself to some popcorn, I could not help but fixate on the chic, critical and quotable Miranda Priestly, played by none other than the fabulous Meryl Streep. As I was watching the movie, one of her most iconic quotes must have planted itself in my subconscious. That quote is none other than, “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.”

And yes—just how groundbreaking florals are for me because they are my style advice for this week. Here in the Windy City, we do not get a lot of greenery. It’s usually shades of brown, beige, grey and black. And if you happen to be stuck between two high-rises, there may not be a tree in sight. However, have no fear because just like Annie, Sia and Sarah Parker sung on Glee, you are never fully dressed without a smile…and a floral print.

I stopped one Fashionista as she was on the go to class and my fellow sophomore was serving straight Amal Clooney fierceness. I mean she was regal yet relatable and fashionable but with an individual approach that could take any eligible bachelor off the market. She paired this wonderful sunflower print rayon button-up long skirt from American Apparel with a truffle colored Spandex sleeveless crop top also from American Apparel. This Fashionista totally embodied a garden in a concrete jungle. That is the magic of florals; they bring color to an otherwise colorless canvas. It is the right amount of pop. She finished off her look with brown sunglasses that she swore she found from a vintage store. However, I have tried to recreate the style here for you all trying to imitate the look.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: “Find yourself. Love yourself. Accept yourself. and Be yourself.”
