STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Don't Stress Over the Distressed

September 23rd, 2016 at 2:00am

Friends, family and strangers from around the world, I hit the streets of Central Michigan University with my camera slouched over my shoulder and an optimistic breeze blowing through my head.

It was time to search, find and photograph a fellow Fashionista for an article that you’re now reading. I was drawn to the confidence of this featured gal, and her genuine vibe gave me the courage to break the awkwardness and ask to feature her.

So, let’s see what we have here. Just as you read this from top to bottom, so I will describe specific aspects of her style from top to bottom alike.

Her loosely curled hair framed her face and accentuated her aviator sunglasses. In lieu of the final days of summer, this long white tank top is perfect for being cool enough in the heat of the day. Her jean capris are splattered with bleach and distressed in areas. These rad booties, which happen to be sporting my favorite color, are functional for walking around campus, fashionable and a bold staple for the outfit.

I’m not going to neglect the one component of her fashioned outfit that truly declares she is in fact a full time student: her backpack. Filled to the brim with various contents of a studious student, this Fashionista declares that going to class can be cool! She sure has shown us a unique way to do so with style.

If you’ve managed to follow along reading this far into my article, you may find yourself wondering why the title is what it is. Fear not, my friends. Keep reading because it’s about ready to get real.

The jeans that this Fashionista are sporting are beautifully inspiring. No doubt about it, you could go online or into a store and buy a similar pair. That’s what the companies want you to do ultimately, isn’t it? Be inspired to the point of buying a similar product in their store. As these thoughts flow through the river of consciousness, there’s a three letter acronym that always gently whispers itself into my ear: DIY.

Some quick food for thought: what if we were to take a pair of jeans that we already own and show them a little tender loving care through a little DIY? Maybe you wish to recreate the unique bleach splatters using a small bowl of bleach and an old toothbrush (I advise wearing gloves and performing the task outside and with caution). Or, you might want to distress part of a knee hole, or give the jean near your ankle an accent using a pair of scissors or a cheese grater!

Don’t get me wrong: a little retail therapy every now and again is arguably healthy for any gal’s soul. However, I challenge us to examine what we already have, gather some of our friends to do the same, have a night of letting our creativity and imagination flow and not stress over how we’re going to get ourselves a pair of those awesome, distressed jeans.

Let’s transform those jeans just collecting dust in our closet into something beautifully one of a kind.
