STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Burgun-Dos and Don’ts

August 11th, 2015 at 2:00am

Colors are anywhere and everywhere. They’re the first thing you see in the morning and the last things you register at night. Colors shape our world and define who we are as people. Emotions and attitudes are easily seen in the colors we choose to wear. When you feel strong and sassy, you may find yourself reaching for your red dress or your strappy red heels. If you’re feeling fresh and weightless, you might find that you are wearing a soothing green sweater or a calming blue blouse. Either way you slice it, colors make a statement, so what do you want your style to say?

I can tell you this much, autumn is the season for rich jewel tones. Art and fashion are often a reflection of nature. Keeping this in mind, try channeling your inner leaf — think poppy reds, sharp oranges, lemon yellows. Strike up a fresh, bold color palette for fall. But wait, why stick to the classics? I like the way you think. What’s better than cookie cutter fall colors? Colors that catch your eye but involve a little switch up. Burgundy is no average red. The subtle color is more subdued than a bright red, but can make just as big as a statement. Before tackling this color alongside the boys of fall, consider these burgun-dos and don’ts.

Do: match your nails to your outfit. This Fashionista got it right by matching her burgundy nails to her foldover cross-body bag. Don’t: match your nails to your hair (unless it’s short). No gnarly nails, please. Do: select a burgundy statement piece and build your outfit around it. Notice how this Fashionista punks up her burgundy purse by opting for studded black combat boots, light wash jeans and a see through lace top. Don’t: drown yourself in burgundy. Nobody likes the Red Sea that much. Do: expand your horizons. Try a burgundy purse on Tuesday, and then try burgundy boots and lips on Thursday. Don’t: get caught in a rut. Play with the burgundy, but mix it up and keep it fresh. Try mixing in some hunter green or golden pieces. In the words of a fashionable man, “You’re gonna like the way you look.”

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Stay true to your style, but don’t be afraid to take risks. Experiment in your style and discover all the possibilities. Whatever you wear, be confident, be you.”
