STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Be Merry And Bright

What is it about the cooler months of the year that makes people break out the dark hued monochrome outfits? Sure, stores are filled with the black down jackets that keep the cold out and the warm in, but isn’t there some way to maintain some color on our person other than the pink in our cheeks?

This Fashionista caught my eye with a bright red scarf contrasting against a light gray coat. Up close, the scarf has a couple textures and patterns, which really makes this statement piece pop. Scarves come in so many different styles and colors and patterns that it’s impossible not to find a scarf to match your outfit. Not only are scarves necessary in the cold months, but they’re also the perfect touch to add to your monochromatic outfit of black coat, leggings and boots.

While this Fashionista chose an oblong scarf, there are also blanket scarves, infinity scarves and square scarves. For winter time, my personal favorites are the knit oblong scarf and the pashmina blanket scarf. Everyone knows that the knit scarf is a classic for winter since its thickness shields skin from the wind, but the pashmina blanket scarf offers more variety for fun patterns. Pashmina is a fine cashmere wool material, so it’s both warm and soft.

Even though this scarf stole the show, this Fashionista also showed that it’s okay to venture outside the monotonous monochrome. Her gray jacket will keep her just as warm as people in black, but she’s also showing that it’s okay to break the norm a little. Not only that, but her black loafers and forest green satchel give her outfit a European academic flare.

So next time you get dressed in all black this winter, remember that a colorful scarf can go a long way.
