STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Addition Instead of Subtraction

I think most Fashionistas have heard the common piece of advice of looking in the mirror and taking off one accessory before leaving the house. However, some fashion lovers do not like to follow this rule. Why wear one trend when you can wear three? That is the question I asked myself when I saw this outfit. This Fashionista combines the trends of lingerie-inspired garments, high-waisted jeans and skinny scarves into a perfect look. She adds a chunky-heeled shoe to complete it. Everything creates a balance between edgy, casual and flirty tones. She decided to keep her look chic by focusing on the basics.

Another awesome part of this outfit is that nearly everything is thrifted. The jeans, slip dress and scarf were all found at neighborhood thrift stores. This tactic for finding items to satisfy the current trends is very budget-friendly. You can be surprised at what older garments you may find that match the styles designers are sending down the runway. We all know that trends come back after a certain amount of time!

Start with the basics as she did then, once you are comfortable with the trends, you can begin to substitute each item with a more unique option. The light wash jeans could be traded for a darker wash or a more distressed pair. Update the lace slip by finding one in a different fabric or unique color. The alternatives for accessories are endless! If you have not tried this particular trend combination, I hope you now have an idea of where to start!
