STYLE ADVICE: All About the Velvet

As we welcome in the new year, we welcome a new thread of trends and fads that come with it. 2016 was the year of bringing back fads of the past, such as off-the-shoulder tops hitting their height in popularity in the โ€™60s, and bodysuits originally becoming popular in the โ€™80s. One of the most prominent trends in everyday fashion this past year were chokers coming back with a vengeance from the โ€™90s. It seemed like everyone was wearing them including our favorite stars like Gigi Hadid and Beyonce, and they even made an appearance in Saint Laurentโ€™s ready to wear F/W collection. It was hard to go anywhere without seeing someone rock this simple, but essential, accessory.

Something even more dominant than chokers this past year may have been the abundance of a fabric that has made itโ€™s reappearance in many decades throughout the past hundred years: velvet. Whether it was at Givenchyโ€™s or Balmainโ€™s F/W 2016 collection, velvet seemed to be the most used fabric of the fall.

To showcase some of 2016โ€™s most popular trends, this Fashionista is sporting an ensemble that puts the yearโ€™s best trends together in a stylish and funky way. She is wearing an off-the-shoulder velvet blouse in a gorgeous deep purple color. She matched this with a pair of BDG high-waisted black jeans from Urban Outfitters. For accessories she decided to wear black booties to complement that edgy and trendy look.

Her choker was a DIY she made from a navy velvet ribbon from a local craft store. This is an inexpensive and simple way to complete an outfit. She added a metal clasp to the back to make it easy to take on and off.

Overall, this outfit is a combination of some of the most sought after trends of 2016, and this Fashionista rocks it!
