STYLE ADVICE: Accessorizing Black Outfits

Black has always been in. It’s traditional but modern, universal and eternally stylish. I have started adding more black pieces into my wardrobe recently because of the universality.

It’s easy, however, to get lost in all-black outfits, where the clothes end up wearing you instead of the other way around. Monotone outfits should emphasize your figure and sense of style, not take away. Whether you choose to wear bold or minimalist colors, all you need is accessories to make the color yours.

Take this Fashionista’s outfit for example: while the all-black clothing gives her a polished look, all her accessories and little details make her stand out. I especially love the contrast her white tennis shoes provide. The brightness draws the eye’s attention and the worn look only adds character to the overall look. The shoes emphasize the Fashionista’s hustle and bustle lifestyle, a characteristic of urban settings and college life. Worn tennis shoes are the staple every girl’s wardrobe needs.

The texture of the bag diverges from the rest of the outfit, adding diversity to the overall look while still abiding by the color theme. But what really stands out is the combination of the jade bracelet and hoop earrings. The complimentary accessories pay homage to both the Fashionista’s cultures and emphasize how they play into her everyday life. The hoop earrings are also totally classic and reminiscent of 2000s American pop culture (Mean Girls anyone?).

Black is always in, but sometimes it’s a hard color to pull off, especially during the winter season. However, with layers, different textures, and/or accessories, a Fashionista/o can add some individuality and make the color their own. I know I will be following this specific Fashionista’s trend and adding more accessories to my outfits during this season.
