What to Wear to Every Type of Rush Event

pink top and skirt

There may be plenty of questions racing through your mind as you prepare for sorority recruitment, but fashion lovers know the first question is always “What will I wear?” We know the power of a killer first impression—especially when you only have five minutes to impress someone, as is the case during the craziness of rush. While some schools are nice enough to give out guidelines on what to wear during recruitment, not everyone is so lucky. But don’t worry—if that’s the case for you, we’ve got your back. Paired with your dazzling personality, these outfits will have you ready for whatever the week throws at you.

Put Your Own Spin on Orientation Dress Code With a Statement Coat

Chances are your Panhellenic council will provide everyone with a T-shirt to wear on one of the first events of rush; it’s also likely they’ll ask you to pair it with denim. This tee-and-jeans dress code means everyone will be wearing the exact same thing—something most fashion students dread. To ensure you stand out from the crowd, gravitate toward less standard pieces, such as two-toned jeans or a pair with distressed hemlines. Further elevate the look by throwing on a statement item like a faux-fur coat. Not only will it give your outfit some added originality, it’ll also keep you warm during the long walks between houses.

Opt for a Not-So-Simple Sweater-and-Jeans Combo for Open Houses

Consider yourself lucky if you’re not given a shirt to wear on day one—that just means you have more freedom to make a killer first impression with your look. You’ll typically be visiting each house for a short period of time on the first day of recruitment, so the dress code leans more casual. A classic sweater-and-jeans combo can be perfectly appropriate for the occasion; I like to make it fun by trying to find pieces with fun details like fur-trimmed sleeves. As far as accessories go, think practical. Comfy shoes are a must because you’ll be on your feet all day, and a crossbody bag that can fit all the recruitment week essentials will complete your look.

Hit Up Philanthropy, Sisterhood, and Scholarship Day in a Winter-Proof Professional Look

It may be chilly outside, but don’t let that stop your style from shining through at events where you’re asked to dress business casual. While often overlooked, a bold pair of dress pants can be your saving grace during winter recruitment. Pop on a turtleneck sweater, your most comfortable booties, and some funky statement earrings and you’re ready to knock out the next round.

Bring Out Your Best Dress for Preference Night

By now, you probably have an idea of your favorite houses. The sororities you’ve formed strong bonds with will invite you back one last time and likely ask you to take part in a ritual that is an instrumental part of their sisterhood. You’ll want to be extra respectful during this, so break out your best dress for the evening. This is a great time to wear heels and jewelry, but stay away from anything that feels too flashy. The night’s look should be semi-formal and timeless.

Combine Back-to-Back Basics for Bid Day

The day you’ve all been waiting for! You can of course still have fun with your hair and makeup, but keep your outfit more low-key. You’ll likely be given a T-shirt to wear, and since you don’t know what it will look like, an all-black outfit is the safest way to go. Black skinny jeans are great options for bottoms, while a tank top or tee are perfect options for the quick change into your new letters. And, of course, don’t forget the sneakers—it’s time to run to your new sorority house.
