Five Ways To Ace Your Interview In Style

You have filled out every online application that seems to exist on the internet. Your résumé has been blasted out by family and friends. You have connected with every third-degree connection on LinkedIn. All that hard work has paid off because you have landed yourself that coveted next step—the interview.

Preparing for an interview is definitely a two-fold process. First, you have to make sure you are ready for the actual interview process. Did you spend time researching the company? What are some exciting initiatives they are working on? Did you get some information on the person you are interviewing with? Did you think about why you the perfect fit for this specific role? Did you remember to print out your résumé and provide a link to your online portfolio? These are just a few of the dozens of questions you need to properly think through before you even shake hands with the interviewer.

After hours of running through questions and answers, your brain may be a little fried. But there is one final question that cannot be overlooked—what are you going to wear? Unless you are planning on going into a traditional business setting, the days of formal suits are behind us. Individuals working in creative fields such as journalism, tech, PR, fashion and communications let their looks reflect their inspiring environments. So, as the saying goes, “Dress for the job you want.”

Lucky for you, CollegeFashionista is here to help! Check out these five looks to get your creative juices flowing and inspire you to land that dream position in style.

1. Printed pants

Update the classic prep look with a pair of printed cropped pants. Make sure they aren’t too form fitting and are tailored to perfection. Keep the rest of the look simple with a cable-knit sweater and pumps.

2. Colored coat

Black seems to be the go-to for most interviewees. If you gravitate towards the dark, balance out the look with a bright colored coat. A pair of cat-eye glasses also add an element of spunk and personality.

3. Layers, layers, layers

It is possible to wear denim to an interview and still be appropriately dressed. The key? The chambray shirt. Wear it layered under a darker knit sweater for a layered look that is as multidimensional as your skill set.

4. Not your average blazer

The modern suit doesn’t have to be so matchy-matchy. A brightly colored blazer pairs nicely with a simple black skirt and patterned silk top. Keep the rest of the look neutral for an unexpectedly cohesive look.

5. L.N.D. (Little Navy Dress)

Keeping it simple doesn’t mean you have to be boring with your interview look. Instead of black, opt for an A-line navy dress. Complement the dress with a colored belt for a polished look that just says, “Hired.”
