CAMPUS TRAVEL GUIDE—University of Wisconsin

Who would have thought a city full of culture, art, music, architecture, food and fashion would have been tucked away in Wisconsin? But Madison, home to the University of Wisconsin, is a cosmo of culture in a state often stereotyped by their cheese production and good-looking NFL quarterback. Here are my top picks of where to eat, what to see and, of course, where to shop in one of my favorite college towns, Madison!

For happy hour – Get ready to kick it like a Madison local at Wando’s, home to the famous “fishbowl.” There is nothing fancy about this joint – just a lot of Midwest character.

For brunch – If you love brunch, Madison has endless possibilities. My favorite is Bassett Street Brunch Club. The atmosphere, $3 mimosas and dressed up doughnuts are out of this world. And they serve breakfast all day. Enough said.

For sightseeing – If you are into people watching (and who isn’t), The Memorial Union Terrace is full of action. Plus, it overlooks Lake Mendota. You’ll know you are in the right spot when you see brightly colored chairs, brats and pitchers of beer. If you are traveling to Madison in the summer, be sure to check their concert listing. Don’t leave without getting Babcock Ice Cream—it is made locally and is a Madison staple. Try the cookies and cream!

For shopping – A.L.C, Timo Weiland, L’Agence are just a few of my favorite lines found in contemporary boutique, Iona. From modern and edgy to bohemian and classic, this Madison boutique has been seamlessly curated. They have a perfect combination of recognizable designer names intermixed with emerging labels.

To stay – I am anxiously awaiting the April opening of The Graduate Hotel. This new chain of university-themed hotels appeals to both alumni and others visiting this college town. The big buzz is the seventh floor rooftop bar that is supposed to have a menu that is super tasty.

The best burger – I kid you not—Dotty’s Dumpling Dowry is the best burger I have ever had. I love the décor of this spot and am a sucker for old movies, which are playing on screens throughout the restaurant. After your meal, walk it off on State Street, which is just a block and a half away.

Hidden gem – The food at Graze is perfection. Grown locally from Wisconsin farms the menu is constantly changing. The best views are at night when the entire Capitol lights up in the floor to ceiling windows.
