AROUND TOWN: 31 BITS

February 25th, 2015 at 2:00am

Natural and repurposed jewelry is swiftly making its way to mainstream fashion and everyday street style. Fashionistas and Fashionistos are gravitating towards styles that are organic, fresh and original. One local company, 31 Bits, is taking this market by storm and solidifying their mark with international philanthropy. 31 Bits’s mission is to use fashion and design to empower women to rise above poverty, specifically the women of Uganda who earn an income to support their families and holistic counseling including mentorship, and health education. Each piece is hand crafted from 100 percent recycled materials.

Name: Cecelia Needham

Role: Campus Representative, 31 Bits

CollegeFashionista: What is 31 Bits and what makes it so unique?

Cecelia Needham: 31 Bits is a company that uses fashion for good. It is a company that uses fair trade. We empower women in Uganda to rise above poverty. Its been a really great company to work with so far and I plan on growing with them.

CF: What is your position at the company?

CN: I am a campus representative. So my responsibilities include presenting to classes, facilitating discussions and informing students of our brand and mission. I also sell 31 Bits merchandise—mainly bracelets but if students want other accessories, I am able to provide those as well.

CF: What are some of your favorite pieces from them?

CN: I always rep my Daphne bracelets. They’re great for layering, they come in several colors, and are only 12 dollars. What’s great is that our prices are reasonable, you can purchase a 10 dollar bracelet or a more intricate piece that range from 40 dollars and up.

CF:What upcoming trends are you looking forward to this season?

CN: I really like floral and pastels. I’m really into light pinks, blues and purples. I also enjoy two-piece matching sets.

CF: What are your favorite beauty or accessory trends?

CN: My outfit is always complete with a bold lip. I also mess around with my bangs; they’re fun to play up. Interesting pieces of jewelry that have a backstory are also an outfit must-have. I like when people ask me where I got my pieces from. What’s even better is when I can say I got it from 31 Bits or even from my own repurposed collection. I repurpose spoons into really cool looking rings. I’m also into the layering necklaces and chokers.
