ALL IN THE DETAILS: Trend Stacking

Some of the finer things in life, including the unique details found in fashion accessories, are often overlooked. This is a shame, especially when you consider just how many fashionable ensembles are centered around the small things. Many of today’s popular trends stem from these lesser parts and pieces of the outfit as a whole. Current examples include midi rings, floppy hats and the ever popular stack of bracelets. These vogue nuances also are usually more affordable. Smaller purchases of accessories that may or may not be “in” next year are easier to justify in comparison to, say, a new dress or nice pair of shoes.

Take, for example, this stunning Fashionista, who uses several of these devices to create her outfit. She is wearing a chic black tank with long fringe, a very popular trend this summer, matched with plain, light washed denim shorts and a pair of snakeskin slide-on sneakers, yet another current craze. She completes the ensemble with a classic gold and black bracelet stack and a burnt orange cross-body bag to add a pop of color.

But don’t get carried away with the penny-pinching. If you are on a budget, like most college students are, money can also be saved in the long run by investing in a few higher quality, classic accessories. These always current and fashionable objects can be worn with or without the cheaper, trendier items of the day.

How To: Start with the basics—a simple dress or plain top and bottom—and then pick your favorite trendy accessories to spice things up. Sometimes, if you’re feeling bold, you may even go a step further, changing things up with that slightly more risky item you purchased for this very moment. Not to worry if it ends up too extreme; you can always dial the accessory down with simpler pieces in your closet until you achieve the perfect balance.
