ALL IN THE DETAILS: Passion For Patterns

Different patterns have come into fashion over different eras of clothing. Tie-dye came into its heyday in the 1960s. Plaid was the signature print for the grunge look of the ’90s. And let’s not forget how polka-dots grew in popularity for almost four decades at the beginning of the 20th century. These prints are so iconic from their respective eras that sometimes even the most modern outfit can look retro with the right pattern. Well, I propose that the early 21st century be known as the era of pattern mixing. People are wearing bold stripes, plaids, florals, polka-dots, houndstooth, watercolor, animal print and tribal prints together in a variety of combinations that fuses the best iconic prints of the past with modern trends.

This Fashionista is pairing two classic patterns in her outfit: plaid and polka dots. She’s sporting a plain blouse with a dark navy sweater to match her navy and red plaid cigarette pants. Her white and red polka dot sneakers complement the outfit nicely. Lastly, this Fashionista finishes off the outfit with a pastel pink sunhat. These pieces mix well together because they utilize the same classic preppy color scheme of red, navy and white with a pop of light pink. Overall, the outfit gives off a timeless New England vibe with a fun, summery twist.

How To: Pick your two (or three or four) favorite patterns in coordinating colors and just go for it! The key is to not over think it. If you want to wear palm leaf print trousers with a floral and bird print blazer, do it! Be confident in your look and you’ll go far.
