ALL IN THE DETAILS: From Function to Fashion

July 5th, 2016 at 2:10am

The origins of flannel travel way back to the 17th century. From functional to fashionable, this timelessly rugged material has come a long way. Finally, creeping its way into the hearts and closets of Fashionistas/os of this century. More dynamic than the average cardigan, flannels have become a go-to cover-up for those looking to spruce up their style. It seems as though you can walk into just about any store in the mall these days and find some form of this plaid statement. The variety of colors and patterns to choose from make flannels easy to pair with just about any outfit, whether you snatch an old one out of your dad’s closet or you order it from Free People.

In this Fashionista’s look, the flannel completes the outfit. It adds tremendous detail and style that would have otherwise been lost. The burgundy, black and white flannel is eloquently paired with burgundy Converse high tops, portraying a fun and laid back style that is both comfortable and cute. What I love about this Fashionista’s look are the detailing in her accessories. Her bracelets, rings and sunglasses add the perfect amount of glitz to an otherwise super casual look. The versatility of the flannel adds a fun dimension to this popular style as well. Wearing the flannel around the waist does a great job of accentuating the element of her high-waisted shorts and crop top, giving the outfit a vibe that’s a bit on the edgy side. Overall, this outfit highlights the reliability and flair that is flannel.

How To: The beauty of sporting a flannel is that this look can be as affordable as you want it to be. If you don’t already have one lying around the house somewhere, your local Goodwill or thrift store is likely to have a cheap one. They can be most easily paired with a plain shirt or dress, but if you’re feeling a bit on the adventurous side, don’t be afraid to pair one with a complementary pattern!
