STYLE GURU STYLE: Reinvented Goth Girl

The color black has definitely etched its own place in my heart. Black is featured in many of my go-to pieces, whether it be shirts, shorts or sandals. Although I do wear other colors, my inner goth girl usually reigns supreme.

At New York Fashion Week’s Ready-to-Wear fashion show, Alexander Wang showcased his fall 2015 line with a gothic flare. The line is edgy, beautiful and drenched in black. I couldn’t help but use this as inspiration in my summer wardrobe. Since his line includes many pieces that weren’t summer friendly, I kept the same concepts and color palettes in my own outfit.

Although Alexander Wang created a grunge look, I decided to bring the goth girl into summer. My first mission was to still feel cool and breezy, since black absorbs light and makes you feel hot and uncomfortable in the sun. Second, I wanted to use patterns and texture to make my look a bit edgy, while retaining the casual aspects of the outfit. Lastly, I wanted to have fun with my inspiration and threw in my own personal style into the look.

I wore a patterned button-down that added interesting texture to the outfit. To add some edge, I paired my top with leather-quilted shorts and pointed d’Orsay flats. In order to keep a fresh appearance, I kept my make-up neutral with a bit of liquid black liner that wouldn’t budge in the heat. The entire look is my adaption of the goth girl during summer, possessing an all black wardrobe, breezy clothes and casual style.

This look made me feel both casual and edgy on this beautiful summer day. The outfit is effortless but gives any girl that extra edge during this hot season. Now, the goth girl can go out in summer thanks to a little reinvention.
