With New York Fashion Week having just happened, I was looking at Style.com to see all of the most recent runway shows that I, sadly, could not see in person (someday, I hope). Recently, I’ve taken a liking to model Gigi Hadid (her looks, not sure about her lifestyle) and I noticed her modeling for quite a few designers. One designer featuring Gigi piqued my interest and had some super interesting styles: the Anna Sui fall 2015 ready-to-wear line. In recent collections, designers have been featuring a lot of ’70s-inspired items. Anna Sui’s collection incorporates this trend and, with gilets, shaggy jackets, shearling and fabrics she uses, gives it an edge. In the review of the collection, it says that she was inspired by the television series Vikings (a show I’ve seen commercials for and been trying to find time to watch) and incorporated mid-century and Scandinavian designs into her collection. Also in the review, it says, “and many of them had tresses as wild and tousled as any Viking princess,” courtesy of a special shampoo that hairdresser Garren had given them to use before the show. “It makes their hair look like it’s only ever been rinsed in a stream,” he said, which added to the appeal of the collection for me—it’s a hairstyle I’m always trying to achieve and now I’m on the lookout for that magical shampoo.
When trying to incorporate these types of designs into my wardrobe, I didn’t really know where to start. I don’t have any cool furs—though I’ve been trying to get my hands on a nice gilet for a while now. However, I recently bought an Urban Outfitters dress that seemed to echo some of the patterns used in Sui’s collection very nicely. I tried to keep my entire outfit’s color palette within Sui’s choices, so I added an olive/forest green cardigan over top (which I think went nicely with the burnt orange/red hues of the dress). Since it’s cold outside, I had to wear a pair of tights, though normally I would not. I don’t own any pony-skin Frye boots—though I’m pretty jealous of them—so I finished off my outfit with a pair of Dr. Martens lookalikes. Though the pictures are very snowy, making for a pretty atmosphere and looking as though I was freezing my butt off, it really wasn’t that cold out and the outfit did me well. I’m a big fan of folkloric style, so I hope my outfit choice emulated that in some respect.
