4 Important Things To Do Before Your Internship Interview at a Fashion Publication

If you are a fashion journalism major, tell me if this sounds familiar. You compile your best writing samples, angst over a creative cover letter, submit your resume and hold your breath only to receive the dreaded “Thanks for your interest but at this time all positions are full” response. Tears well up as you apply for another internship…

But then after the 84th rejection email, the golden ticket hits your inbox inviting you for an interview. The easy part is over, right?  For most people, this is when the anxiety sets in, especially if you are more of a wordsmith than a public speaker.

Don’t worry—it’s totally normal to feel nervous. Instead of having a mini panic attack, there are a few things you need to do to ace your interview at your favorite publication.

Follow our advice and you’ll be one step closer to seeing your name under “intern” on the masthead!

Research, research, research!

Really knowing the magazine’s publication is super helpful and necessary. Get the copy of their latest issue. Also, go to the library and find older issues. Interviewers might ask you which issue, article, editor or even photographer was your favorite. It’s impressive if you mention an issue that isn’t the past three recent issues. Read through the magazine’s media kit which can often be found on their website. If it’s not there, no problem. Try to lay out who their target audience is, what will you gain from the internship, and why you enjoy reading their magazine.

Story Ideas

Hands down, most interviewers will ask you for pitches in fashion and beauty. Think ahead with a list of potential trends and news stories, and how its treatment could look like in the magazine. Is it perfect for print or online? How can you promote the story on social media? Why is it relevant for their readers to know? How is it on brand for the publication while being fresh? Understanding all of the magazine’s platforms is great to figure out how they push stories. Also, staying up to date with today’s current affairs demonstrates that you follow what’s happening in the fashion world.

Bring your Resume

Always bring a copy of your resume. Although there’s a chance your interviewer won’t ask for it, your resume is full of talking points. Instead of just restating what’s on the paper in front of them, think about what makes you you (aka the most qualified candidate in the history of intern candidates). Get comfortable speaking about your past experiences and skills such as Photoshop and WordPress. Your previous experience in the field is living proof that you can multitask with a part-time job, schoolwork, and hobbies. You can also mention how your school courses has helped you hone your editing and writing skills. This could include fact checking, feature writing, fashion journalism, social media promotion, and/or public relations.

What to Wear

Dressing for an interview with a fashion magazine allows you to showcase your creativity and personality. Rather than wearing a business casual blazer, choose a statement coat. Although hats and beanies are major in fashion right now, leave you topper at home and actually brush your hair for the occasion. In this look, I wore a black dress, white fuzzy coat, and my go-to black heeled booties. It’s effortlessly professional, yet chic.

Before you go to your interview, take a deep breath and relax. Remember, you can do this! Keep these useful tips in mind and without a doubt, you’ll make a lasting first impression.

Stay positive after the interview and follow-up a week later, if you don’t hear anything back. Good luck!
