STYLE GURU STYLE: Viva la Velvet

Summer has been a blur this year. It’s now back-to-school time and that means preparing your closet for new #RAD outfits. If you’re ready to start feeling yourself this next season, then this trend is perfect for you.

Looking back to Paris Fashion Week last spring, many designers were hooked on velvet! It was a popular material used in the garments that rocked the runway. Givenchy showed it off beautifully in some of their fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection. Velvet gives an outfit a rich, luxurious look. It will definitely keep your closet looking polished among the sea of sweatpants on campus.

We’re not in the fall season yet, but that doesn’t mean that you have to wait to wear it. I picked up this velvet v-neck halter while doing my college shopping. The purple tone stood out to me; the shimmer in the material would be a great addition to my fall wardrobe. The cut of the top looks great with high-waisted bottoms. With the tight look from my top, I decided to pair it with my hi-rise jeggings from American Eagle Outfitters. They give me a slim and sleek feel when I’m walking around outside. Plus, the onyx wash complements the purple tone in the top. Finally, a nude caged sandal adds detail to this look.

The great part about jewelry is that the different styles you choose help to complete your look and make it your own. I went with a bowler hat and gold statement jewelry for myself. I particularly like layering my jewelry, so I chose a black choker and gold necklace. All of my other pieces were gold and black to bring it all together.

This outfit is perfect for day-to-night. By throwing on a white button-down shirt, you can feel comfortable wearing your look at your desk in the office. Take it off and you’re ready for a girl’s night out as the lights capture the shimmer in the velvet.

Get My Look: 1. A velvet top. 2. High-waisted jeans. 3. A hat. 4. Statement jewelry.
