STYLE GURU STYLE: The Slip Dress

July 27th, 2016 at 2:07am

The spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection by Calvin Klein was all about one thing: The slip dress. The silk frocks in the collection came in neutral shades of ivory and taupe, while some were printed with florals; something rather uncommon for Calvin Klein. Many of these slinky dresses were worn under open-front coats. According to Vogue.com, Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa “imagined the morning after a liaison, when a woman might toss her lover’s tailored jacket and too-big pants over her lingerie” for this collection of romantic looks.

Borrowing from the current lingerie and ’90s trends, this style of dress has been a Fashionista must-have for this summer. Taking inspiration from the trend and Calvin Klein collection, I wore a cold shoulder slip dress (double the summer trends!) in a feminine, light pink color. Cold shoulder and off-the-shoulder tops are perfect for summer time and are a great alternative to show off some skin. This season is all about the healthy glow of the shoulders and décolletage.

I paired the dress with a black cape blazer for a tailored look. I like the look of an effortless slip dress combined with a more tailored piece. The blazer is unique in its cape style, adding a twist to the overall outfit while maintaining a chic appearance. A black blazer is a staple in my closet and can always be dressed up or down.

The Calvin Klein collection was very minimal when it came to jewelry, so I refrained from wearing any except for my favorite oversized statement ring and pearl studs. For shoes, I kept with the minimalistic theme and wore my ankle strap sandals in patent black. This style sandal, especially in a color like beige, is ideal for when you want the main focus of your outfit to be somewhere else. Ankle strap sandals create that barely-there look, making them so easy to wear with everything.

Rock a slip dress in a silky finish for some serious lingerie vibes, or go with a less sexy material for a more casual look. You can also try layering it over a white T-shirt! This style of dress is breezy, light and requires no real effort to look super trendy. Throw one on and you’re ready for this summer.
