STYLE GURU STYLE: The Paperbag Waist

School has been in session for about a month or so, and with homework and extracurricular activities crowding my mind, I try not to let my style and fashion sit on the back burner.

The paper bag waist is a flattering every day trend that is great for days when you’re busy and on-the-go. This style complements almost every body type with its cinched fabric around the waist. These higher-waisted bottoms are usually cinched (or gathered) at an area around the waist, with excess fabric coming out the top. Most of the time there is a belt or ribbon tied that adds more detailing and draws the eye away from the “ruffled paper bag” look.

This elastic waist gives plenty of room to move so you don’t feel constricted, but I chose to go for a look and a pair with a zipper and hook-closure for a more fitted waistline. This is a great transitional trend that comes in many different styles such as pants and skirts. Tucking a fitted top into shorts or pants will give balance to the exaggerated proportions caused by the cinched fabric.

Loose or baggy fabric is something that one should not combine with this style because it will end up looking unflattering on anybody. This style is also extremely versatile; combining a pair of paper-bag waisted jean capris with a crop top and sneakers for a casual day around town or a skirt with a tucked in button-down shirt and heels for day of interning.

The look I have on features the trend in shorts, paired with a basic white tank top and gold necklace which is perfect for a day on campus, but can be dressed up with a pair of wedges for a weekend brunch.
