STYLE GURU STYLE: Sporty Spice

What do you get when you add enough black and gray for a movie marathon on Turner Classic Movies, throw in a pop of color and sprinkle in a few sporty accessories? Well, if you mix them all together and bake until golden brown, you’ll end up with the rag & bone resort 2016 ready-to-wear collection—okay, maybe I lied about the whole golden brown thing, but the combination of classic neutrals and simple pieces make rag & bone a great place to start when looking for some inspiration for your next outfit of the day.

This show kept color to a minimum by using only shades of black and gray. But just when you thought this collection was strictly fifty shade of gray (literally), it surprised you with red accents displayed throughout the show via jackets, sweaters and skirts. As for the collection itself, coats, knit sweaters and even a track suit or two came together to give texture to the otherwise simple show. By incorporating sneakers, stripes and bomber jackets into this urban minimalistic collection, rag & bone really spoke to my inner Sporty Spice—can you say “zigazig ah”? (“Wannabe” by the Spice Girls reference.)

When it came to creating my own rag & bone look, I made sure to keep things sleek and slouchy. I started off with my favorite striped T-shirt dress and layered an oversized, cream utility jacket over top. The utility jacket mimicked the chunkiness of the sweaters included in the collection, while adapting it for a more summery look. I kept things relatively colorless by sticking to the original neutral color palette. My sneakers provided a color pop and also contributed to the sporty nature of the look through a few varsity stripes for added pep. Accessories were the finishing touch. Taking my look from military-chic to urban jock with a black sports watch and classic black JanSport backpack.

And there you have it—one sporty minimalistic look served up in style courtesy of rag & bone!

Get My Look: 1. White and gray striped T-shirt dress. 2. Oversized utility jacket. 3. Varsity striped sneakers.
