STYLE GURU STYLE: Retro Renegade

Fashion is eternally focused on looking to the best of the past, which gives us the retro look. In the ‘60s, glamour and femininity dominated the forefront of desirable style. From the country club to the boardwalk, exhibiting ‘60s fashion can transform you into a retro radical. My look this week was inspired by beachwear of the ‘60s, and the costuming from the 1963 film, Beach Party. By using oversized clothing items, and adjusting them to streamline my figure, I have achieved a look that is as fashionable today as it would have been in the ‘60s. As the summer comes to a close, take risks! You don’t have to religiously follow the book of fashion to take your look from ’60s glamazon to 2015 bombshell; incorporate your style for a punch of personality.

I discovered outfit inspiration in an expected place, or time, rather. While browsing the 2016 resort collections, I was excited to find that Carolina Herrera seemed to have been inspired by ‘60s femininity as well. The Carolina Herrera 2016 resort collection is indicative of fashions of the past, with a dash of the present. From accentuated waists, to floral motifs and structured shoulders, this collection is a refurbished take on ‘60s glamour. Look two is the outfit from which I drew a majority of my inspiration. I echoed the abstract pattern featured in look two’s pants in my own shorts, and tied up my shirt in a traditional way to get the same waist accentuation.

My look consists of a light-wash denim button-down, and white printed high-waisted shorts. The combination of the high-waisted shorts, and the tied up button-down created the vintage look that I hoped to achieve. I chose to modernize the look by adding simple black sandals, a black cross-body bag with gold detailing and a silver statement necklace. I also added a pop of red lipstick to play homage to my favorite vintage dressed singer Taylor Swift.

Take risks and be the Fashionista or Fashionisto that you want to be every day. The world is your runway, so make it work!
