STYLE GURU STYLE: Minimalism in Winter

In 2016, there was a huge trend of minimalism. As a loyal fan of the Normcore style, I’ve spent a busy time looking for oversize coats, sweaters, and wide-leg trousers to wear and they had never disappointed me. And as always, winter is a perfect season for minimalists like you and me. The many layers of clean-cut pieces can make us stylish and keep us warm at the same time.

Wool coats and cashmere sweaters can never go wrong. They are practical, comfortable, and versatile—you can match them with any kind of shoes: sneakers, slippers, ankle boots, or stilettos. For the color, I would pick black, white, or gray, but I would also carefully avoid getting pieces that are all in the exact same color. So in this look, I matched a light gray wool coat with a deeper gray sweater to reflect layers.

Accessories are important, too. In winter, an all-black or all-gray look may make you look dreary, but good accessories can definitely light up the wardrobe. The long statement earring has been this year’s new hit, and I found it works extremely well with coats and sweaters. Therefore in this look, I picked a deep purple, long earring with pearls to match the turtleneck sweater. Also, to give the outfit a bright spot, I picked a white crossbody bag. And it turns out, the bag works very well with the dark tone of the coat and sweater.

All in all, clean-cut pieces, lots of layers, and light-colored accessories are the three principles that I feel are most important to make a minimalism look.
