STYLE GURU STYLE: Dreaming Of Tulle

I can’t be the only one that’s tired of boring formal wear. Sure, I love my go-to little black dress for when nothing else seems right, but what are some clothing choices that are more interesting but still effortless?

Jean Paul Gaultier was inspired by weddings for his spring couture collection. Throughout the collection, he reimagined what is considered to be typical formal wear and added his own flair. Something that stuck out to me from the collection was the creative use of tulle. In the collection, tulle is used in various ways, from a giant bow in front of a dress to spicing up a beekeeper’s outfit. Tulle is an unexpected fabric that can be utilized for both playful and sophisticated looks.

Taking inspiration from Jean Paul Gaultier, I paired a midi tulle skirt with a classic white lace off-the-shoulder top. This look is effortless but looks extremely sophisticated and well thought out. For shoes, I opted for understated nude and brown heeled sandals. The overall outfit is very elegant due to its use of tulle, lace and muted colors. The trendy midi skirt also maintains a sense of modesty and class despite the naked shoulders. I kept the accessories simple and did not wear a necklace to avoid taking attention away from the interesting neckline. I completed the look with a pair of knotted gold earrings.

There are many ways to dress up without looking cliché. You can experiment by playing around with different fabrics, styles and colors; the options are endless, so don’t limit yourself. Next time you have to dress up for a formal event, think outside the box!
