STYLE GURU STYLE: Black Is Never Out Of Season

Sure, spring is supposed to be a season full of pastels and floral prints, but right now the weather forecasts aren’t really supporting that. Looking out the window and seeing slush and dark skies only further supports my tendency to opt for black outfits everyday. Let’s be real—black is never out of season. While surfing style blogs instead of doing my schoolwork, like usual, I stumbled upon Simone Rocha’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. This collection took to my immediate liking because it featured quite a few black on black ensembles which is right up my alley. Look number four in particular really caught my eye. This look features a black dress with a puffy bottom and feather accenting on the top, almost like a boa. Personally, I thought this look was super edgy, girly and full of glam, thanks to the built in boa aspect. In fact, as I continued to eye up this outfit, I was reminded of a new skirt in my closet that had the same vibe. Excited to create an inspired ensemble, I went right to my closet.

The skirt I decided on was made of layered tulle and lace. It was black and puffy so it resembled the look Simone Rocha created. I wore this skirt over a black bodysuit in order to keep the theme of black on black going. My bodysuit was cotton and featured a cool design in the back which, paired with the layers in my skirt, added a lot of texture to the outfit. Though I’ve been crossing my fingers for sunny days, Philadelphia has been seeing quite a bit of snow and temperatures lower than my age. The shimmery polka-dotted tights I wore to keep warm also added a little bit of sparkle and shine to my look and amped up the girly aspect. On the contrast, I broke in a new pair of combat boots to emphasize the edginess of my look. Though the look by Simone Rocha did not include jewelry, I chose to sport a statement necklace because I basically feel naked if I leave the house without any jewelry on.

My girly but edgy look was completely inspired by Simone Rocha’s look. I recreated my own ensemble that included the puffy skirt aspect, the glam aspect and, of course, the black on black aspect. This look would be perfect for a date or a night out with the girls.
