The Ralph Lauren 2014 ready-to-wear collection was everything I could have ever dreamed, plus a little more (it gave us Lupita Nyong’o's Globe Globe dress). The collection stayed true to the brand’s preppy roots with clean lines and perfect creases. But, what I loved most was the minimal use of color in the collection. The majority of the show featured no color at all. There were different combinations of textures and patterns all in black and white to create variety and make each look unique. It wasn’t until the final few looks that we were pleasantly surprised with a pop of neon color with cobalt blue ball gowns and bright orange trench coats.
These days I find myself reaching for a lot of neutrals, mostly blacks and white. I usually add some color with my make up, either a bold lip or a bright nail color. I took inspiration from the Ralph Lauren show and “matched” a black-and-white, polka-dot blouse with a hound’s tooth A-line skirt. I wore white socks with a subtle chevron pattern created within stitching paired with white platform jelly sandals. For a pop of color I added a bright green clutch with hot pink nails.
I loved this collection so much because the collection, as a whole, illustrated my personal style. There was not one thing that I saw that I would not wear — and I’m hard to please. My style is constantly changing. I think that the pieces presented to us by Ralph Lauren are timeless and will fit into mine or anyone’s wardrobe no matter where I or they are on life’s style journey.
