Hello to all my fellow Fashionistas! My name is Melyssa Granat and I’m a freshman at George Washington University, located in the extremely fabulous and trendy city of Washington, D.C. I’m really excited to be a part of the CollegeFashionista team and look forward to showing off the fabulous Fashionista/os that are all over the GW campus. Walking down the streets of D.C. is very much like strutting down a fashion runway; everywhere you look young men and women are decked out in the season’s hottest trends. I find plenty of style inspiration just by walking to class, so I hope my weekly column will offer the same to all you readers.
It’s difficult to label my style, however I would say it’s a mix of urban, city chic, and classic and edgy. I believe fashion is a form of self-expression and therefore, you should wear pieces that describe who you are regardless of what style category they fit into. My style varies from day to day depending on my mood, but whatever I decide to wear I make sure it gives me the confidence to own the day. To keep up with my ever-changing style, I find it’s important to have some essential pieces as well as a few trendy pieces in your closet. For example, basics such as: skinny jeans, knee-high leather boots, Dolman long sleeve tops, a black blazer and a great leather jacket. I absolutely love my Paige dark wash skinny jeans and my Vince Camuto leather boots. I’ve been wearing them to death this season along with the latest addition to my closet, a classic black Free People leather jacket which makes any outfit instantly better.
Along with the basics, it’s important to keep up-to-date with the current trends by finding some you love and envisioning ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe. This season I was obsessed with colored jeans and bought blue, burgundy, red and olive colored skinny jeans that were perfect for my fall wardrobe. Leather was also big this season so I took advantage of this trend with these amazing Blank NYC leather pants and a great pair of leather leggings from Tobi. Both added a little edge to my look and made even the plainest outfit look more fashionable.
Being a college girl on a college budget, finding online sites with cute clothing at a good price is imperative. With my hectic schedule, online shopping has become my new best friend. I frequent websites such as NASTY GAL, Tobi and Material Addict to find the hottest looks, sickest heels and boldest accessories. For all you college girls out there, remember to stay true to who you are and dress for no one but yourself! Style is all about self expression so take chances and walk the streets of your campus like all eyes are on you!
