STYLE GURU BIO: Megan Mackenzie Perez

My name is Megan Mackenzie Perez, Meg for short, and I will be sending you style advice from abroad this spring semester! I am so very excited to be a new member of the CollegeFashionista community. I am currently a junior at Temple University studying political science and religion. This upcoming semester I fortunately have the chance to study in London, England for the next four months. London seems like the perfect place for me considering I am an avid tea lover with a passion for classic British literature. You may often find me sipping on some Earl Grey with a Jane Austen book in hand, perhaps Pride and Prejudice, swooning over Mr. Darcy. Not to mention everything tartan completely sweeps through my closet. One of my main goals is to eventually start my own classic British style clothing brand, so stay tuned!

My interest in fashion has existed since I was about six making dresses out of the wrapping I received toys in. Obviously, my style has developed beyond the tissue paper phase at this point (one can only hope). In general I would describe myself as a lover of classic timeless clothing with accented trendy or statement pieces as icing on the cake. The majority of my outfit will consist of simple flattering cuts that I think exude a sense of sophistication. You always have to be a little fun though and that is where my trendy accent pieces come in.

I’m a huge fan of old Hollywood and glamour so you can often catch me glamming it up with a bright red lip and some faux fur. I love old movies and am inspired by the women that graced the big screen; you can find me watching AMC or Turner Classic Movies at least once a day. I’m five feet nine inches tall and I still love a six-inch stiletto more than any flat you could throw at me.

On the basic winter day however I like big blanket scarves, cable knits, button-downs, a dark skinny jean or a light boyfriend jean, booties and a pair of wayfarers! Growing up I spent all of my summers by the ocean and love anything and everything nautical. My favorite brands and places to shop range from Michael Kors, J.Crew, Madewell, Ralph Lauren, Topshop, all the way to some of my all time favorite places to stop in quickly: Gap, H&M and Zara. I love feminine clothing; you can catch me in dresses throughout the entire summer and warmer months. Feminine colors, prints and cuts are my go-tos with soft curls in my hair or a ballerina bun. My experience as a ballerina over the past decade or so has influenced my style decisions a great deal.

Here I am wearing a marigold-colored Patagonia vest, a slim-fit, button-down oxford, a great pair of light-wash boyfriend jeans which I found on sale and a pair of dark chestnut leather booties. For my accessories I added a double wrap-around watch and gold bracelets from Michael Kors and a great plaid blanket scarf from Abercrombie & Fitch that picks up the color of my vest nicely. These clothes are simple classic pieces that give flattering shape, but when you put them all together they give off a fashionable and trendy look and are still very timeless. On my typical day walking around my hometown this is the type of outfit you could spot me in.

I leave this week for my United Kingdom-European experience so stay tuned for all of the advice I’ll be bringing to the table. Stay fabulous!
