STYLE GURU BIO: Maria Hofinger

My name is Maria Hofinger and I am currently a sophomore at Kent State University. I am pursuing a major in fashion merchandising and minors in both sustainability and photography. I am so excited to work with CollegeFashionista this semester and bring you guys monthly articles to serve as outfit inspiration!

My journey with fashion has been quite interesting and has taken many unexpected turns. Starting my senior year of high school, I was about 97 percent sure that I would be entering college with an undeclared major because none of the ones I had run across had really resonated with me. Then, I somehow came across fashion merchandising. It is the perfect blend of creativity and something more straight forward, given the business aspect of it. During my freshman year of college, I was beyond obsessed with putting together outfits, thrifting for unique pieces, and staying on top of the latest trends.

As I began to learn more about the fashion industry, I started to become aware of the devastating effects that this industry has on the environment, as well as the people that manufacture the clothing we wear every day. This realization fueled my love for thrifting as a more sustainable way to enjoy fashion and all the self expression that comes along with it (not to mention it is much more affordable—especially on a college budget). I am constantly striving to make my personal lifestyle more sustainable and to move away from the system that most fast fashion retailers use to mass-produce cheap clothing.

Speaking of thrifting, every item in this look was found at local thrift stores around my area. I have layered a fitted gray turtleneck and pinstripe tights under simple black overalls and a relaxed wool trench coat to stay warm while walking around campus. Some simple accessories such as a vintage Italian leather purse, a small black watch, and some casual heels make this outfit a perfect mix of trendy and timeless.

I cannot wait to share more looks I find around campus to inspire fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos while also advocating for conscious, ethical fashion!
