STYLE GURU BIO: Emily Harris

Hey, Fashionistas/os! My name is Emily Harris, and I am a junior at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am majoring in Fashion and Textile Management, which I plan to use to pursue a career as a fashion buyer. Studying at the world’s largest textile college is such a blessing, and I can’t imagine earning my degree anywhere else.

I have been head over heels (no pun intended) in love with the world of fashion for as long as I can remember. Yes, I know a majority of girls love shopping and keeping up with trends, but my infatuation with the industry encompasses much more than what colors to wear this fall or if bell-bottoms are making a comeback. The business, models and the logistics of the top fashion houses in the world interest me just as much, if not more.

I’ve always been known as the girl who overdresses for every occasion no matter the circumstance. Even if I’m just running to the grocery store, I’m reaching for my favorite poncho and over-the-knee boots instead of a hoodie and yoga pants. Why, you ask? Because it takes just as long to throw a put-together outfit on, and I feel much better about the way I look. Confidence is everything when it comes to style. I also believe that style is a visual form of your personality. Anybody can go to Nordstrom and buy the same blouse, but it is how you wear and pair the blouse that makes you stand out. Edna Woolman Chase said it best: “Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess.”

In regards to my personal style, I can’t describe it as anything other than my own. I say that because it’s both eclectic and modern wrapped into one. I never strive towards one specific style, it just depends on what I am feeling that day or what I think would pair well together. My inspiration stems from different places and people, but never from one specific source. I see everything in my closet as individual garments with endless possibilities and no stipulations. There are no rules, regardless of what those pesky “no white after Labor Day” folks say.

Other than fashion, I am a lover of all things makeup, caffeine, or fitness related. A majority of my free time is spent at Starbucks or in the gym, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love trying new things on a daily basis, especially restaurants. I live in the tiny town of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, which I will always call home, but I do believe that, after college, I will spend a couple of years exploring the one and only New York City and traveling as much as my wallet will allow.

I can’t wait to begin this journey as a Style Guru, and I hope I inspire at least one reader to amp up their style is some aspect along the way!
