STYLE GURU BIO: Ella Young

Hi friends! My name is Ella Young, and I am a junior at Washington University in St. Louis (a.k.a. Wash U). I am a Fashion Design major, minoring in Art History. My studies might explain why I am a Style Guru, but actually this is my first venture into the world of fashion blogging. I am excited as it is a place for my reflection as well as an opportunity to reach out to the stylish students who inspire me.

Here’s a little about me: I grew up in Los Angeles, but knowing I want to live in California I decided to go to college in a different state to experience another part of my country. West Coast vibes and the edge of city life still influence my style, despite my run-ins with Midwestern charm.

I love getting dressed. Styling is such a unique creative outlet, but I think why I particularly enjoy it is because I never grew out of playing dress-up. My closet is one big costume box and six-year-olds are my style icons. I love fun prints and color. In fact, until last week, my hair has rotated through various hues from powder-pink to fuchsia to lilac and grey.

I don’t typically follow trends and definitely dance to my own beat. While my personal style may be a little “out there,” I appreciate classic design and minimal aesthetics.

As any good daughter will write, my mum is my biggest influence. A Fashionista herself, she lived through the decades I merely imitate. I learned about fashion history, fabrics and garment construction all from her. (Really, after all her training how could I not pursue fashion!). She showed me the adventure of thrift store shopping and how to maneuver a flea market. My appreciation of vintage is entirely her doing. I have a particular love of ’50s dresses with cinched waists and full skirts.

My style boils down to a blend of artsy and vintage. I look forward to sharing my looks and those of other Fashionistas throughout the semester! Until next week….
