STYLE GURU BIO: Devin Mercer

Hello fellow Fashionistas/os! My name is Devin Mercer and I am currently a junior at North Carolina State University. I am majoring in fashion and textile management with a concentration in product development. Ever since I can remember, I have always had a love for fashion. As cliché as it may sound, fashion instills a sense of confidence in me that I have trouble finding anywhere else. I have found pleasure in taking the time to pick out an outfit each morning, because I know that it will allow me to feel ready to take on the day. When I was younger, I was the girl that always enjoyed playing dress up. Play dates called for wearing my favorite Disney Princess costume and I took this idea to a whole new level when I wore a crown and my church dress to my second grade class picture. I guess kate spade was right when she said, “Playing dress up begins at age five and never truly ends.”

My desire to dress up followed me all the way through high school; whether I was preparing an outfit for class or prom, all aspects influenced my love for fashion. Even in college I revel in the opportunity to put on a cute outfit, whether I may be heading to my classes on campus or going downtown to the city of Raleigh with my friends. Each outing offers an opportunity for me to revert to my five-year-old self and play dress up again.

Looking back over the years, my style has changed significantly. I can promise you that I no longer wear crowns and costumes, but have developed a more appropriate sense of style. I have an affinity for blouses with intricate beading, tops with lace trimming, pastels, floral patterns and anything with a touch of sparkle. I also love the simplicity of ripped skinny jeans, a chambray blouse, a boho summer dress or a one-of-a-kind piece that I found at a vintage clothing shop. One of my favorite looks might include a fun blouse, a statement necklace and a cute pair of booties to pull the whole outfit together. I would have to say that I have a very eclectic sense of style; it really depends on the day that tends to be the determinant in what I am going to wear.

I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity, not only as a Style Guru, but to be able to document other Fashionistas/os out there while I am studying abroad. I am excited to see the ways in which you will all inspire me and I only hope that you will join me on my fashion adventure!
