STYLE GURU BIO: Charina Nguyen

Hello there! My name is Charina Nguyen and I’m currently a senior studying Media and Cultural Studies at University of California, Riverside. Studying Media and Cultural Studies has helped me recognize my passions and career goals in life. My plan is to work somewhere in the media industry such as fashion, beauty, photography, film or even social media. So when I received an email from CollegeFashionasta early December telling me that I was going to be a Style Guru this semester, I was beyond excited…and a bit nervous, but I’m definitely ready for it.

As a young girl I adored dressing up, putting on cute floral pastel dresses and strutting down the mall with my mom. Many family members called me a little Fashionista and teased me for always overdressing. Around my awkward pubescence stage I dressed more comfortably and was not as interested in fashion or beauty. However, it wasn’t until my junior year of high school that cemented my fascination for fashion. The moment changed when I bought and wore my first pair of high heels. It was then that I finally formed my own style and began religiously following fads. It was this exact pair of heels that I wore that made me confident to dress better. It was then I realized how fashion helped showcase my style. Besides fashion, I also have a newly found passion for photography since I started taking photography classes.

Personally, I don’t gravitate toward a certain style. Rather, I choose to dress myself depending on my moods and attitudes. My close friends would describe my style as girly. Most of my inspirations come from street style to watching YouTube videos or flipping through magazines. Also, I like following trends from all worlds, particularly Korea. I really adore their approach to minimalistic street style, which I’m dying to emulate.

I’m super stoked to be photographing chic and spiffy people around my campus. I hope I can help my fellow readers and Highlanders get inspired by various street styles and aid them in learning valuable fashion tips this semester with CollegeFashionista!
