STYLE GURU BIO: Alyssa Carbonara

Hello fashion lovers! I am very excited to be writing for CollegeFashionista this semester! I am going to be a junior at Illinois State University. I major in Fashion Merchandising and minor in Business Administration. At my college I’m a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Apparel Merchandising and Design Association.

Through out high school, I took fashion construction classes but had no interest in going into the fashion field until my senior year when I was on a college visit talking to a communications counselor about my interests and plans after college. She told me I was in the wrong building to go across the quad to the fashion department’s building. After just one meeting, I realized that fashion was my true passion and my career began. That summer I began working as a seasonal sales representative for Nordstrom and have been with the company for two years now.

When studying abroad this past semester I was emerged into fashion. It was everywhere I looked. In every country I visited the fashion was different. Along with taking fashion classes at my international university I lived down the street from the most famous street for shopping in all of Florence. On occasion my class would take place in the Dior store or window-shopping down this street. I learned a significant amount about fashion from just walking down the streets of the different places I visited. I traveled to nine countries in total and countless cities. One can imagine all of the different styles I saw. Some of the styles I loved and wanted to replicate myself. But there were also some styles I hope will never come to America!

My personal style varies depending on the event or my mood. My wardrobe has hints of bohemian; generally those items come from Urban Outfitters. When putting together an outfit I like it to always be somewhat feminized. I do this by including flowers or bright colors somewhere in my clothing or accessories. Recently I have been a big fan of all black clothing with either a statement necklace or a colorful hat. I have a lot of opinions about fashion. Being a Style Guru is the perfect way for me to voice them all. Now I get to write about all the different styles I see on the streets everyday!
