STYLE GURU BIO: Aamina Haykal

Hi Fashionistas/os my name is Aamina Haykal, and I am a senior at Columbia College Chicago. I’m currently studying Fashion Design with a minor in Fashion Business. This is my second semester as a Style Guru and I am very excited to continue. Being a Style Guru allows me to combine my two favorite things: fashion and photography! Attending an art school has been a great experience because there are so many diverse and creative fashion styles worn around campus.

I have had a love of fashion since I was seven years old. My mom, as well as my mentor, taught me how to sew. Art has always been my favorite subject growing up because I enjoy drawing fashion illustrations and figures. I aspire to be a fashion designer working for a luxury fashion firm then once I gain enough experience, I would like to start my own label. I don’t know what I would do without fashion because it is my true passion.

In my free time I enjoy sewing, shopping, photography, and staying active on social media. Staying up to date with the latest fashion trends is important to me. One of the best parts about being a Style Guru is that it makes it easy to do just that. My personal style can be described as casual chic. I like to mix casual pieces like jeans, leggings and sweaters with dressy items like skirts and blouses. A simple change of flats to heels or understated to statement jewelry can take an outfit to a different level.

I like to dress up or down depending on my mood or this crazy Chicago weather! It usually depends on the latter which is why in the look I am sporting I chose to pair a crop top and mini skirt with a little leather jacket for those cool spring nights. I would be at a loss without this jacket because it goes with almost everything in my wardrobe. Since I am always on the go I need my Michael Kors tote bag wherever I go. I am currently obsessed with this African print skirt I got from a pop-up shop! I have never been one to shy away from bold colors and mixing prints. However, it is important that I am wearing neutral colors like beige, black and white to compliment loud colors.

There are so many ways you can play up your style while staying true to yourself. The best part about fashion is being able to express yourself without saying a word!
