STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Not Your Average Poncho

It seems like, as of late, most people have been wearing the same trends they spent their childhood rocking. What girl didn’t own a colorful, fringed poncho in their elementary school days?  Maybe you even paired your poncho with a beloved pair of gauchos.  Vintage trends are taking over the fashion world. This time, however, the poncho is revamped with less fringe and more geometric shapes.

I don’t believe anyone is complaining about this trend coming back, though. I mean, nothing is more convenient than a stylish shirt that requires no effort to wear because all you have to do is throw it over your head. The styles of ponchos range from bohemian to preppy and even chic. There are endless possibilities to this trend, which is why it is perfect for every person to try.

This particular Fashionista paired her cream-colored poncho with black jeans and simple black booties, but what really upgraded this outfit was the gold sequin tank top underneath the poncho. The sequins show just on the shoulder and when she lifts her arms. What I think really makes this outfit more 2016 and less 2002, though, is the shape and pattern of her poncho. This Fashionista chose a neutral colored, cropped style with a square hemline and triangular neckline. The open-weaving added an element to this outfit without bringing it over the top. With a statement piece like this, it is always a safe choice to stay simple, especially with accessories and pattern.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I think that when wearing a poncho it is easy to lose shape in your outfit. By pairing it with skinny jeans and heeled booties, it helps to elongate the boxy shape that the poncho creates.”
