STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: It’s Basically about the Basics

Keeping it simple has always been something that I like to do when it comes to my personal style. Basics like plain shirts, sweaters and dresses, are the first things I grab when I go shopping. The reason? Their versatility and ease. I find it hard to believe that I’m the only one who hates how we can’t wear our beautiful statement pieces that are just hanging in our closets as much as we’d like to for fear of the “OMG she’s wearing it again” whispers. There’s undoubtedly nothing better than being able to wear something multiple times with various different outfits without it looking repetitive or banal. And here we have it: the magic of the basics.

Anyone who’s into fashion is aware of all the latest trends and of how basics are everywhere more than ever recently. The good thing about them is that they can be worn over and over again, without anyone realizing, because of their flexibility and ability to be matched with all different clothes. Combining different styles and trends to create outfits that are stylish and attention-grabbing is what everyone’s been doing, including myself (or at least I try). What most Fashionistas have been doing is pairing simple basics, like T-shirts and boyfriend jeans, with one major statement piece to create versatile looks that can change with just the snap of your fingers. Considering how frigid it is already— at least here in New York— the statement piece is usually a to-die-for coat which ties the entire outfit together and keeps us from ending up in the hospital with frostbite. The result? As I’ve already mentioned, effortlessly chic and graceful outfits that every single Fashionista lusts over.

Now, where do I begin with this Fashionista? Everything about her outfit is attractive and completely on point. She’s tucked a plain white T-shirt into a pair of high-waisted skinny black jeans and threw on a pair of extremely cute black ankle booties for comfort and warmth. In came a beautiful oversized gray coat that balanced the overall color scheme of the outfit and added shape and volume to it. Lastly, her black leather purse and minimal accessories added more flare and completed the look. Perfect? I think I might just go with a big, fat yes for this one.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “It’s all about mixing and matching! It’s time for us to finally take out the basics that we stuffed in the back of our closets and embrace them. There’s nothing easier and more enjoyable than combining simple pieces with statement ones to achieve fashionable, versatile minimalistic looks.”
