STLYE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Holy Crop

June 2nd, 2015 at 2:00am

Yes, yes originals are always better than sequels. Seriously, who would argue that the first Step Up was not by far the best? Anyways, this works as a rule of thumb unless, of course, you are talking about style trends. It seems that 2015 has been the revival of the ’90s…only with better hair. You’ve got joggers, overalls and flannels appearing in everyday style but with modern touches. And one of the biggest comeback kids (which seems to be here to stay) is the crop top. This trend is everywhere, but I felt the need to give this lovely Fashionista in particular some credit for following the often forgotten “Unwritten Rules of Crop Tops.”

Let me start by getting something off of my chest. *Takes deep breathe.* Hi, my name is Alanna and I am a crop top addict. My sisters have had to tell me to put down the crop top I am about to try on in the store because I have a nearly identical one at home. I admit that I have a problem and I should be seeking help, but in the meantime, I feel the least I can do is share the wisdom that I have gathered from having this sickness.

Girls, I know that you may have your favorite pair of low-rise shorts and your favorite crop top and think, “These would be perfect together!” So forgive me when I break this news to you: they probably will not be perfect together. If you want to pair a crop top with shorts, high-waisted shorts or skirts tend to be much more flattering. This centers the amount of skin you are showing around your legs rather than showing off lots of legs and tons of tummy at the same time.

This is why, I feel, this Fashionista rocked her crop top, boho look without coming off as too skimpy or too messy. She paired her crop top with a pair of loose, harem pants that hang from the waist. This shows off some stomach while covering up her legs enough to keep away any illusion that she is too exposed. She also kept it simple with subtle makeup and minimal jewelry. Slide on your sandals, grab your favorite everyday purse and you, too, can wear this Fashionista’s look.

By no means am I saying to cover up like it’s winter. This is South Florida. Today it was a cringe-worthy 93 degrees. Show off that tummy or show off those legs! There is a type of confidence that comes with showing a little stomach, especially if you’ve been working on your summer bod slightly more than usual. Be confident but just remember that less is not always more.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Just wear whatever is comfortable. Just be original.”
