BEAUTY BAR: Rockin' the Pixie

July 15th, 2015 at 2:00am

Seems to me the days of—and love for—long hair may be coming to an end. You could argue there has been a trend in favor of very long hair in recent years. Maybe it was when Tumblr girls began sporting #hairgoals on the web that “hair down to your butt” became the dream for so many young women. Perhaps now a few years later, having met their goals for insanely long hair, some of those same women are now opting for the complete opposite: the pixie cut. Emma Watson was considered ahead of the curve (not surprisingly) when she went pixie in 2010. The next most notable adopters were Jennifer Lawrence and Miley Cyrus in 2014. The “new do” has since taken off to become one today’s edgiest fashion trends.

As a rule, the pixie has always been something more than just a haircut. By definition, it has been hailed as a rebellion against gender roles ever since the defiant age of the Flappers in the 1920s, when it first became popular. Of course there are others who don’t read so much symbolism into the pixie; they choose it simply for the ease and convenience of having short hair. If you want long hair, the extra time and effort that comes with it is unavoidable—something I can entirely confirm.

The above Fashionista rocks her hairstyle along with her outfit. She is wearing an eye-catching midi, a somewhat full, floral skirt and a simple gray V-neck, all matched with brown combat boots, a brown belt, large sunglasses and a burnt orange bag.

Another thing I love about this Fashionista is her choice of absolutely no jewelry and very light makeup—if any at all. She keeps her accessories classic and simple while her haircut and clothing are bold to boot. The difference between the two creates a very polished and unique look.

What’s on the BEAUTY BAR? If you are interested in a pixie, I recommend you start by finding a hairdresser you could pretty much trust with your life. Then, talk at length with that person about whether this hairstyle could work for you. If you decide to take the plunge, do it with gusto and enjoy the daring change!
