BEAUTY BAR: Long Live the Lob

Just when you thought it was over, the lob is back and the new black. Actually, the lob is basically the little black dress of hair. Like the LBD, when it comes to a lob there’s a variation of the cut for everyone. Though the style’s been around for ages, the lob was “officially” deemed a style a few years back. Falling in between a bob and shoulder length-plus hair, the term “lob” was coined and earned its place in the hair history books.

Part (yes, punny) of the reason this cut works so well is the fact that it is majorly versatile: a lob is open to a plethora of length and variation combos. A great example is on the Fashionista pictured here. This Fashionista transformed her look from longer locks to a shoulder-grazing lob and hasn’t looked back. She’s working a tousled lob with ombréd ends, which pairs great with her ensemble of chambray and gray, Converse-esque white high tops and nude lips. Her cut, though tousled, gives the whole look a polished-meets-devil-may-care vibe. Think windswept by the blow dryer. It works well contrasted with her purposely super-sharp brows to really highlight her features.

Whether you opt for the ombréd and layered look or something else, I highly encourage everyone to “lob” it off at least once. This cut is basically the never-awkward, in-between-lengths sweet spot. it could be cut sleek and straight with a gradual fall forward or it could be just-below-the-chin and choppy. Anyway you work it, the lob is one of the most versatile haircuts out there—the true Goldilocks zone. Seriously. With summer fully in  swing, short and simplistic hair never felt so good.

What’s on the BEAUTY BAR: Beyond scissors and a good hairdresser, the best way to achieve this particular style lob (especially great for the summer) is KISS: keep it simple, stupid. One way to work it is to dry wet hair with a diffuser while hand-scrunching it, topping off with a good misting of sea spray for that added of texture. The key to this look is the contrast, so try pairing your tousled ‘do with high-def brows by drawing them in with a gel and brush combo, working from the outside in. On the fence? Words of wisdom from this Fashionista are “just do it.” After all, I’m pretty sure LBD is actually an acronym for Lobbed Bada** ‘Do.
