ALL IN THE DETAILS: Talk About Texture

We tend to notice the obvious details in an outfit: the accessories, the patterns, the colors etc. Texture, the often-overlooked component of detail, plays a huge part in giving an outfit that little extra something. When shopping, we often judge the item of clothing based on feel as much as look. Some days we Fashionistas and Fashionistos of the world aim to look put-together and will perhaps reach for something structured. Another day we may feel like wearing something soft and sweet and put on a light and flowy shirt. Whatever statement we wish to portray with an outfit, it can be said entirely with the texture of the fabric.

This Fashionista nails the multi-texture look by combining a variety of different materials. The subtle embellishment on her coat and the hint of denim tied together with knits give visual interest to this otherwise neutral outfit. Accessories and patterns take outfits from simple to complex, much like the textures do in this particular look. The base layer in this Fashionista’s look is a black knit turtleneck and skirt. These are lightweight enough to layer a rough denim coat on top paired with a long, embroidered black coat and chunky scarf. While the variety in material may seem scary, think about the popular trends of mixing leather and lace or fur and silk. These “odd” pairings help your outfit tell stories through nothing else but the material.

This Fashionista completes her look with grey running shoes, which gives the rest of the outfit a more casual appearance. Chunky jewelry and metallic sunglasses contrast the black knits and coat while adding color and depth. From far away the outfit seems simple and modern, but take a closer look and you will notice it is full of interesting detail.

How To: Don’t be afraid to mix knits with denim, silk with wool, or better yet, all of the above. Keep the look simple in color and pattern to let the texture do the talking. Start with two pieces that have dueling textures and layer them!
